Wasted Hours (9/23/2003)

He pulls
apart his
baseball,
the one
signed
by the
members
of a local
minor
league team.

The young
child spends
hours
unwinding
string.

All he
discovers is
another smaller
ball, within
those miles
of fibers,
the wasted
hours where
all he
learns is
the redundancy
of destruction.

There will
be more
for him to
destroy later,
a whole
lifetime of
things,
but there
will never
be enough
time.
