A POEM (V-Day 2010)

THIS IS A POEM FOR YOU AND NO OTHER
AND IN IT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY YOU ARE THE BEST LOVER
I’LL MAKE A METAPHOR ABOUT EVERY DAY LIFE
TELLING YOU HOW GLAD I AM THAT YOU’RE MY WIFE
AND I’LL TALK ABOUT ALL YOUR PARTS FROM YOUR EYES TO YOUR NOSE
TO YOUR TOES
AND I’LL TALK ABOUT HOW YOU CURL MINE
AND MAKE ME SPEAK IN PATOIS: “GIRL YOU SO FINE!”
BUT THEN SOMEDAY WHEN WE’RE OLD
AND MY LEGS ARE BOWED
YOU READ TO ME FROM MILTON OR JOYCE
I’LL LOOK INTO THOSE SAME EYES AND REJOICE.
AND THE WORDS AND THE METAPHOR FALLS AWAY
AND OUR LIPS CURL, LEAVING NOTHING
TO SAY
